CUNEF Universidad launches “Structural Challenges of the Spanish Economy”, a seminar series by Pablo Hernández de Cos

November 21, 2024

The seminar series “Structural Challenges of the Spanish Economy”, given by Pablo Hernández de Cos, former Governor of Banco de España (2018-2024), incoming Managing Director of the Bank for International Settlements (July 2025) and CUNEF alumni , began last Thursday, 21 November, at CUNEF Universidad. In this first seminar, which focused on the housing situation in Spain, Hernández de Cos highlighted the following conclusions:

  • Steep housing demand and tight supply have led to a strong increase in sale and rental prices since 2014.
  • This increase has shown high geographic diversity, with demand shifting from purchasing to renting and contained risks to financial stability.
  • The problems caused by the housing shortage have become increasingly severe, in particular, in the rental market, lower-income households, large cities and tourist areas.
  • Economic policies need to focus on fostering supply, especially in the rental market.
