Last 27 March, CUNEF Universidad held the sixth session of “Thursday Law at CUNEF Universidad”, a cycle on current legal topics, with the participation of José Luis Martínez-Almeida, Mayor of Madrid, Cristina Vidal, Independent Director of Sareb, and Miguel Angel Peña, CEO of International & Living at Grupo LAR. The session, chaired by Andrés Betancor, Director of the Department of Law at CUNEF Universidad, was held in the Auditorium of the Almansa Campus and focused on “Housing, the law and the market”. The speakers highlighted the following key insights:

  • Shelter is a vital need for citizens, which means that promoting public policies that provide access to affordable housing is imperative.
  • Spain is the European country with the highest percentage of family investment in housing, and it is facing obvious affordability issues due to soaring property prices.
  • The housing situation is linked to many other issues, such as quality employment, education, migratory movements or overcrowding.
  • Finding solutions to the housing problem requires increasing supply, reducing State intervention and simplifying administrative procedures.
  • Greater public-private cooperation, increased regulatory stability and policies to promote economic growth are also necessary.
