Professor Hernando is accredited as both Tenured Associate Professor and Private University Associate Professor (ANECA) and has been awarded recognition for a six-year research period or sexenio (CNEAI). He is a Corresponding Academician of the Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation and an Honorary Collaborator in the Roman Law Department at UNED. He is a Professor in the Master in the Master in Access to the Legal Profession in CUNEF and of the Master's Degree in Human Rights at UNED, where he teaches Civil Law, Procedural Law, Classical Foundations of Democracy and Administration and Roman Law. He has supervised several Doctoral Theses and Master ‘s Dissertations, and participated as a panel member evaluating Doctoral Theses, Final Dissertations and Final Degree Projects.
He is a member of a consolidated research group on personal autonomy at the CIAP of the UNED. He is involved in "Historical sources of the general principles of Spanish law and the European Union", a research project funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation (DER2010-19341), as well as in several Research Network Projects for Teaching Innovation, funded by UNED.
