The Professorship of Exemplarity holds a panel discussion on "The Sentimental Education of Democratic Citizens"
February 13, 2024
CUNEF Universidad’s Professorship of Exemplarity commenced its activities on 13 February with a round-table discussion focused on the sentimental education of democratic citizens. The session was chaired by Javier Gomá Lanzón, philosopher and Chair of Exemplarity. The speakers, political scientist and writer Manuel Arias Maldonado and journalist and editor Ramón González Férriz, focused on the following key topics:
- Sentimental education is key to the proper functioning of democratic societies, where the principle of equality implies that citizens are not subjects, as in aristocratic societies, but rather obey themselves.
- Digitalisation and the immediacy generated by social networks have transformed the marketplace of ideas, altered the dominance of journalism and increased citizen participation in the generation and dissemination of information.
- Society is becoming increasingly polarised as the rules of politics transcend and invade the realm of everyday life.
- Self-education as a basis for sentimental education should be motivated by the joy of learning.
- Exposure to and knowledge of Humanities in general enable citizens to navigate life more successfully, which is the ultimate goal of sentimental education in democratic societies.
Chaired by the philosopher Javier Gomá Lanzón, the Professorship of Exemplarity seeks to enhance and consolidate the Bachelor in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at CUNEF Universidad, as well as to embed the contributions of Humanities into teaching and research in all fields of knowledge.
